Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald has commended President Michael D Higgins on his recent intervention on the issue of defence forces pay.
Teachta McDonald said it is time for the government to start listening:
“I welcome the comments of President Higgins in relation to the pay and conditions of the defence forces.
“As supreme commander of the Irish army, it is only right that he should intervene on the matter of personnel’s right to a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.
“The government needs to listen and start taking action because failure to do so will exacerbate the recruitment and retention crisis and ensure further exodus from the defence forces.
“They must understand that members of the defence forces are employees and entitled to the same protections as every other worker.
“The government must recognise the serious damage that has been done to the defence forces as a career option, listen to the soldiers and their families, listen to President Higgins and deal once and for all with these core issues of workers’ rights.”
