Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has responded to the news that Fee Paying Schools received €90 million in public funding last year.

Speaking today, Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;

“The majority of schools have yet to recover from the many cuts during the recession, including to capitation grants, equipment provision, special needs assistants and language  support. That is the background against which the taxpayer is subsidising fee paying schools by €90m last year.

“According to the CPSMA, Parents contribute €40m per annum to the running of ordinary non fee paying schools, simply for things such as heat and light. So it is incredible that over twice that is paid to schools who are fee paying private schools, which in many respects are elitist, where parents have chosen to pay huge fees to send their children.

“Sinn Féin does not believe in a two-tier education system any more than a two-tier health system. If people want to educate their children privately, that is their prerogative, but we do not agree that the families of those who have children in schools with high disadvantage should be subsidising them with their taxes.

“This subsidy is wrong, is unfair on the vast bulk of children and parents, is poor use of public money. It needs to be phased out, and ended.”
