Longford Town boss Neale Fenn was in reflective mood after the game as he tried to pin point what went wrong for the club as they face another campaign away from Ireland’s top flight.

“I don’t want to sound like I’m making excuses but some of the injuries we’ve had have just been unbelievable at times.

“We haven’t had a penalty all season in the league and Drogheda have had nine I think it is, so if you can work out how much each penalty is worth you could be up to five, six, seven, eight points I don’t know.

“We haven’t had any, I’m not saying that’s the ref’s fault. Some of the decisions have been bizarre, but I’d imagine that every manager would say that. Drogheda have had their manager banned for four games for that reason.

“I think injuries would be the one I’d put my finger on, we lost a lot of key players at key times and even tonight you look at the bench at half time your 2-0 down, how can you change it? You can’t really, it’s a bit unfair to throw a young kid on who hasn’t played and ask him to change the game.”

One thing that has consistently cropped up at Longford Town interviews throughout the season is little costly mistakes, so it will be interesting to see how Fenn and his side eradicate those for next season.

“The players will have learned from it. Are the players being consistent? Are the players putting in the same performances every week? Towards the end of the season they did. In the middle of the season or the start we were kind of getting a good result, getting a bad result, getting a good result.

“The performance last week against Drogheda, the first half wasn’t great, but the second half was very good so its about getting more experience and more matches and they’ll learn from it definitely.”

Fenn also felt that maybe his side need to be cuter next year.

“We know where we’ve come up short and its possibly my fault, but we went out to win every single game and I’m sure that not every team in the league has gone out to win every single game.

“Some teams might say we might nick a draw here and if we can get a winner in the last 10 minutes we’ll do that. We didn’t, we tried to go out in every game and win it and sometimes we did and sometimes we didn’t.”
