Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has said the Electoral Office ‘must do more’ to facilitate people who wish to get on the electoral register.
The West Belfast MP was commenting after hundreds of people attended an understaffed registration clinic hosted by the Electoral Office in the Kennedy Centre on Friday night.
Paul Maskey said:
“Hundreds of people turned up at the Kennedy Centre tonight hoping to get their name on the electoral register ahead of May’s local government election.
“Unfortunately, the Electoral Office were unable to meet the demand as only two members of staff were made available resulting in hundreds of people leaving without getting registered.
“The Electoral Office should have provided more resources, given that they were informed in advance that there would be high demand for the event.
“We have asked that the Electoral Office facilitate more registration sessions in the area in the coming days to ensure everyone has an opportunity to access their democratic right to vote.”
