Sinn Féin spokesperson for Defence Teachta Aengus Ó Snodaigh has today called on the Minister for Defence to ensure that the Defence Forces have a seat at the table when the next public sector pay talks commence.

Teachta Ó Snodaigh said:

“While members of the Defence Forces recognise the unique nature of their service to the State, they should not be disadvantaged as a result of it.

“When it comes to public sector talks, members of the defence forces representative organisations do not have a seat at the table.

“Members of the Defence Forces have been forced to take their case to the European Committee on Social Rights to have their right to collective bargaining recognised.

“The review of the Defence Forces Conciliation and Arbitration Scheme, carried out last year, recommended that this matter be progressed.

“Meanwhile the Government has done very little.

“I asked the Minister for Defence about this issue in the Dáil chamber today and he gave no new information as to how he intends to give effect to the collective bargaining rights of defence force members.

“The Minister must give a commitment that this matter will be addressed as a matter of urgency and guarantee a seat at the table for defence force representatives at all future public pay talks.”
