Motorists will no longer be able to pay for their NCT with cash following an announcement by the company behind the testing.
Applus who are contracted to carry out the tests on behalf of the Road Safety Authority said that the decision was for “safety and convenience”.
Until now customers could use cash when arriving at any of the 49 testing centres around the country. However over the coming months the only option available will be either online card transactions or a postal order.
Currently 60% of tests are being booked online through the NCT.ie website. NCT tests currently cost €55 and are carried out by one of more than 500 vehicle mechanic qualified inspectors.
Applus have come under criticism in recent years for the long wait times for NCT tests to be carried out. Many motorists are forced to wait more than six months for a booking date or apply to be put on a cancellation list.
