Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed today’s passage of the Criminal Justice (International Co-operation) Bill 2019 in the Seanad.

The Bill is the Irish Government’s obligations under 2014’s ‘Stormont House Agreement’.

Speaking from Dublin, the party’s Justice Spokesperson in the Seanad said:

“Sinn Féin supports this legislation; along with others we were part of the negotiations to secure the truth and justice mechanisms agreed at Stormont House.

“While the passage of this legislation through all stages in the Seanad today will be a welcome reassurance for some victims of the conflict, for many, many more, it will be another stark reminder of the failure of the British Government to legislate for their requirements under the same agreement.

“This delay is unacceptable and has gone on for far too long – families shouldn’t have to continue to pursue truth and justice in the media or on the streets – these mechanisms were agreed by all parties and both Governments.

“Today the Irish Government has made a significant step forward in advancing this legislation. However, the British Government continues to stall and delay and too many victims remain without the truth and justice they deserve.”
