Sinn Féin spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs Denise Mitchell TD has said the Government should be ashamed of their failure to sort out the hospital waiting list scandal.
Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday, Deputy Mitchell said:
“We have the worst waiting lists in Europe, patients have no idea where they are on a waiting list and people are being left in pain and discomfort for years. There are 54,308 children on waiting lists across this state. And of those, more than 17,000 are waiting over a year.
“This Government should be absolutely ashamed of their record on this issue.
Deputy Mitchell and her party called for an integrated waiting list management system which would allow patients know where they stand on a waiting list and also allow for the transfer to other hospitals where waiting list for particular procedures are moving more quickly.
She also hit out at Fine Gael for ‘throwing money’ at private healthcare providers:
“Many who want treatment in a timely fashion are being forced to go to private hospitals.
“Now, I don’t know what planet Fine Gael live on, but citizens in my constituency who are hard workers, who are raising families and trying to keep a roof over their head, simply cannot afford to go private.
“Nor should they have to, because the State is supposed to be providing healthcare free at the point of delivery for those who need it.”
