Sinn Féin Councillor Sean Bateson has called for increased safety measures on the Drumagarner Road.

Cllr Bateson said:

“Earlier in the week a tractor slid off the side of the road and hit a tree causing the tree to fall directly on to the playing pitch at Pearse Park, home of Kilrea GAC.

“This is the second time such an incident has occurred on this stretch of the Drumagarner Road, adjacent to Pearse Park.

“Luckily no one was injured in the incident and it occurred late at night when the pitch wasn’t being used.

“I have written to the Department of Infrastructure to request a site meeting to have this stretch of the road urgently reviewed. A similar incident happened a number of years ago and could happen again very easily.

“I believe increased safety measures to make drivers aware and protect them of the potential hazard along this stretch of the road need to be introduced.”
